Metabolism is your bodies process for handling calories. They can be burned (providing energy) or stored (in the form of fat). This happens 24 hours a day - while working out, watching TV, and even while sleeping!
If you dramatically reduce your caloric intake, it slows down your metabolism so that you need fewer calories. That's why you bounce right back to your old weight (and usually beyond) as soon as you stop dieting. With a slower metabolism...the standard maintenance level you had before will now make you fat. For any weight loss program to have a chance, you must find ways to speed up metabolism...not slow it down.
To avoid slowing your metabolism, you should strive to lose only 1-2 pounds a week. That's your best chance of keeping it off. Plus, by eating the right foods, you can actually eat MORE than you did before and still lose weight.
One of the other most common ways to speed up metabolism is to exercise. Exercise creates a need for more energy in your body, so you burn more calories! A side benefit to exercise is that you are toning and building muscle. Muscle burns far more calories than fat, so it becomes easier and easier to lose weight and keep it off. (By the way, muscle burns calories even while you are just sitting around!)
Take heart, you won't need to do tons of exercising for the rest of your life! The more you are able to tone your body, the higher your metabolism. Eventually you will reach a stage where you will not need much in the way of exercise to maintain your new svelte look.
Most diets are not effective. They count on that first few pounds everyone loses in the initial days. That makes everyone excited so they spread the word to all their friends. The diet company makes a fortune overnight then disappears. Why? Unfortunately, the weight you lost is usually just water loss that will come back immediately. But, by then the damage is done, you've slowed your metabolism and as soon as you start eating again, you gain it all back plus - on average - an additional 10 pounds.
To take off weight, you need to find ways to speed up metabolism. Speeding up your metabolism involves eating the right foods and doing some exercise. Then, you will lose weight. You have to, it's a scientific must. Starvation doesn't work, if you EVER feel hunger, you are doing it wrong.
